Welcome to FraudFrond.com!

This website pays homage to the fake trees that disguise our cell phone towers. Have you seen these things??! Every time I see a Bogus Botanical or a Counterfeit Conifer, I can't help giggling at the absurdity of it all. These Sham Shrubs have been manufactured so that you and I can communicate with each other, while protecting our delicate aesthetic sensibilities.

Many people don't know about these things. They're hidden pretty well. But if you look for 'em, they're easy to spot. It's a skill; a shift in the brain.

(It's just like those tar circles that are cut into the asphalt of many streets. These things are induction loops, stuck under the street so the stoplights know if cars are waiting. I never saw these until a few years ago -- now I see 'em everywhere.)
There are 130,000 cel towers in the USA alone. A whopping 25% of these are "stealth" towers -- i.e. Lying Lumber -- so that's over 32,000 fake trees.

How many can you find?

Send us a pic of your favorite tower, and we'll send you a wooden nickel! (Get the pun? I love puns you have to point out.) (Ps: The above is a lie: we won't actually send you a wooden nickel. They're probably really expensive.) (But we would be excited to see pics of towers. We'll post them on * FraudFrond Spotter's page.) And please send us any RARE finds. (Fake weeping willow?)

We'd love to hear about any International Spottings! What's going on in Asia? Europe? Africa? Have these things taken over the whole globe?

Okay, so here's
Very simple. On a road trip, whoever spots the most cel-phone towers wins a drive-through meal from the others playing. A spotting has to be confirmed by the other player(s). The driver is NOT allowed to participate (keep your eyes on the road).

Points are as follows:
1 point for each normal cel tower, i.e., gray and obvious.
2 points for any normal cel tower that's off color (orange, camouflage, etc).
5 points for each fake fir/ fake palm/ fake anything.
-2 points for a false spotting. (Eager beavers beware -- that pole on the horizon may be an electric tower.)

Adjust the winning score to your area. In most regions of the country, you'll want to play to 30 points for every half hour of play. In some areas, you can easily get up to 50 in a half hour. And in some areas, there aren't many towers -- the game may suck. Consider playing Connect Four, or adding this rule: 1 point for every car with a driver talking on their cel phone.

There's something poetic, here -- trees as signal towers -- harkening back to the days of smoke signals and pigeon carriers. But these trees are man-made, which is kinda spooky. How strange is it to see these Frankensteins among real nature? On the other hand, they look like something you'd find in a train-set or behind Barbie's house -- something about them is childlike and. . . well, clean and comforting.

Long story short, the basic idea is that you can make something with a bunch of little copies of itself. They use a leaf as an example: within the leaf you can find smaller patterns that look like the general structure of the entire leaf. These Bogus Botanicals are an amazing illustration of that. They make these things out of standardized parts -- and they look pretty real: the fact that they blend-in sorta proves the fractal theory.
